Cynthia Weyman

Cynth Weyman- Artist in Residence, April 24th to April 29th, 2008

Cynth Weymanis a Welsh artist working and living in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Her images are initially created in a series of watercolours, inks or oils. A single image is then selected and transformed into a textile relief technique devised by Cynth called ‘Intaglio Stratta’. Several layers are stitched together then cut away to reveal strong colours and textures. This results in rich and dramatic effects. Embroidery, beads and seeds enhance the final contemporary styled pieces. Fabrics often include cotton, wool and Indian silks.

Cynth’s themes and series of artworks are inspired by natural forms - plants, fungi and rocks, seascapes, erosion and human figures. Her background in teaching art & design, community arts and agri-tourism has led to her working in several media. She loves to explore an image in different ways. Many of her works appear as diptychs or triptychs - a combination of textile plus original drawing, painting or collage.

Every picture tells a story. Audiences gain more stories when Cynth accompanies her work during Artist in Residency programmes, Open Studio events, exhibitions and presentations at Nant Y Coy Arts, Aberglasney Gardens, Theatre Mwldan Cardigan, Minerva Centre Llanidloes and in her own studio at Dinas Cross, Fishguard. She uses a personal symbolic language in some works and audiences are often intrigued to know more about the semi abstract symbolic artworks.

Cynth Weyman reflects on her life as a female artist in her artwork. One piece ‘Coming Down-Going Up Today!’ won best wall hanging and best in show at the Quilt Association, Llanidloes in 2006. It reflects the pressures of exhibition deadlines, the choices selectors have to make and the contributions made by viewers. Also, it reflects the people that matter to her most – partner, family, friends, life models, gallery curators and the general public.

Her current work in progress celebrates the life of a living artist surrounded by her artwork. Cynth usies images from many completed artworks as she celebrates the recognition of her individual contemporary textile style. The Artistic Collaborations collection involving Cynth Weyman, Sharron Astbury-Petit, Barbara Berkowitz and Paula Dean will be on international tour starting with Aberglasney Gardens, West Wales, September 2nd-14th, 2008, followed by England, Scotland and France. Cynth has also been invited to exhibit her textiles in India.
