Autumn Arrives
Hello,
Since I last talked to you autumn has really kicked in. The blackberries are over and the sloes have started to wrinkle. The fungi is multiplying, only the other day, as I was chasing over the humpback bridge, I saw two very small pearl like fungi on the wood. They were like shiny, white pearl drops – quite beautiful.
The autumn leaves are covering the paths quite quickly now. The upper path, now called Dragonway, is covered in beechnuts which crunch underfoot like frosted snow. Beechnuts are very nutritious and are eaten by birds and small mammals. As I continue along the paths, the ground cover changes depending on what tree you are walking under. As you enter the valley you will think we have hung up lots of white hankies. These are actually poems all referring to autumn. Some are written by well known poets, others by visitors to Nant y Coy. If you are ever moved to put pen to paper, please do and hand your masterpiece into reception and we will hang it with all the other “Hankies”.
I think the most exciting thing to happen this month is taking charge of 17 sheep of different shapes and sizes. We did have a bit of trouble the first day. Six of the lambs decided because someone left a gate open, it was their right to wander into the valley. Myself and Chris from the C.C.W. (County Council of Wales) managed with a quiet manner to get the darlings all back into the meadow. The reason for having the sheep is that we get the meadow fertilized so we have hopefully more flowers and better grasses.
Of course being a woman, I have to have names for these sheep. I will let you know what I come up with next time we talk.
HH.
