Songs of Pembrokeshire Paintings
Wed 25th July to Sun 16th Sep 2007
At the age of 11, Beth had to make the choice between
studying art or music, and although she had experimented with
silk painting it was not until she and her husband Alan moved
to Pembrokeshire in 1997 that she was able to develop her talent
for painting.
From the first, she has found a ready audience for her work, with
its emphasis on the light changes and the moods of North Pembrokeshire’s
seascapes and landscapes.
Her paintings are sometimes figurative, sometimes abstract, but
they always demonstrate her emotional response to the scenes before
her. In addition to seascapes, Beth has produced a body of works
especially for Nant y Coy Arts, featuring the Great Treffgarne
rocks above the gallery.
Born of Pembrokeshire parents, Beth was brought up in Chepstow,
Monmouthshire. She graduated in music from the Royal Welsh College
of Music and Drama and the Royal Academy of Music, winning many
scholarships and prizes along the way, before embarking upon a
career in opera. Under the name Beth Michael she has sung with
many companies including Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera,
Bayreuth Festival Opera and English Touring Opera.
For many years she was a member of the Royal Opera, Covent Garden
where she sang many roles and performed in concerts and recitals.
She retired from singing in 2002.
