Andy
Ellis
Andy is a creative spirit. In this exhibition, we will
see large brooding charcoal drawings in contrast to lightweight,
frivolous illustrations for children's book.
Landscape and light have always dominated my ideas of what I
wanted to express in my pictures. I am interested in anything
that changes the familiar structure of a landscape and makes of
it something uneasy and insubstantial.
In my imagination, this takes the form of removing traces of the
human occupation and leaving it to the elements.
The gradual loss of light as day fades to night; a sudden clouding
over; a squall of rain; snow that covers all detail and leaves
only an abstract pattern.
Events that render a landscape simultaneously monumental and mercurial.
Where once I walked
I look
and the hills
wake,
then slowly stand
and walk with me
where once I walked
I lead them
gently
to a place
of stored things.
Biography
Andy Ellis was born in London, but grew up in the West Country.
he attended college in Eastbourne and Brighton (now the University)
and it was there that he first became interested in landscape,
wandering for miles on the downs above the town.
After graduation, he moved to London and pursued a separate career.
However, throughout this period, he kept sketchbooks and would
always draw whenever he got the chance.
A few years ago, he began making pictures of his landscapes. he
realized then, all the drawing that had gone before was a preparation
for these pictures. He have travelled further afield since his
early years; drawing in Wales and France and in America. But he
often return to the West Country and the scenes of his earliest
experiences of wild places. They continue to be his most vivid
inspiration.
In 2002 he started looking for the possibility of showing his
work.
Since then he has exhibited at The Battersea Contemporary Art
Fair,
two shows at the Prince and Pilgrim winter exhibition, the Frivoli
Gallery in London and two solo shows at The Hempel Hotel artspace
in Bayswater.
Andy lives in London with his wife, Mary and two children, Matilda,
11 and Tabitha, 4.
His wife is an author in her own right, having written three children’s
novels for Harper/Collins.
As well as being an artist, Andy writes and illustrates children’s
books and creates ideas for animation series for T.V.
