Margaret Merritt

Margaret is a figurative painter, with an intense interest in abstract and visual ideas. Her passion for nature, and curiosity about the place we have in it, enriches her relationship with art and the process of creativity. Bringing all these things together is her preoccupation.

She works in all mediums, mixing and exploring them as ideas demand. Frequently starting with conventional structuring, then expanding and developing the use of materials as the work unfolds.

Much of her philosophy of art arises from her experience of working for many years as an art teacher with adults who whished to develop the creative side of their nature. Convinced that anyone who wants to paint and draw can do so, Margaret has evolved a style of teaching that is based on this concept.

Currently a teacher at West Dean College, Chichester and Missenden Abbey College, Bucks, she also teaches privately at Glynhir Estate, Wales and other venues in the UK and abroad.

She exhibits frequently, most recently at the 2006 edition of '21st Century Watercolour' at the Bankside - London,  and for Guildford Arts at Baker Tilly (sponsored by Savills).

Margaret has been trained at The Arts Educational Trust (London)& Bretton Hall (University of Leeds). She lives in a watermill in the village of Bramley near Guildford, Surrey.
