Lesley Hollands

Lesley Hollands trained at the West Surrey College of Art and Design gaining a Dip AD in Fine Arts.  She has painted and taught at West Dean College and other places for over 30 years now and still enjoys it.

She has exhibited her work widely with many paintings now in private collections throughout England and the rest of the world.  She has had work hung in the prestigious Singer Friedlander Watercolour exhibition at the mall Gallery an a number of occasions, the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and this year is exhibiting work in the RWS 21st Century Watercolour Exhibition at the Bankside Gallery.

'My work is closely concerned with light and its effects on colour, form and shadow.  I love the vibrancy of strong colours and the way they are changed by intense light and the corresponding deep shadows.  I work mainly with still life in my studio so that I can control the light. The way that the shadows fall and connect the objects in the group is very important and helps to give structure and cohesion to the composition.  I love to use slightly quirky combinations of objects, often putting such things as vegetables alongside old blue and white china or similar items.  I also try to include things that are not immediately noticeable and that would perhaps not be expected to be there.'
