Howard Coles RCA
Born in Cardiff and studied at Cardiff College of Art. Howard taught in the Far East before returning to Great Britain to a career in Design and Art Education. Formerly Head of Art & Design at Hope University Liverpool, he is now committed to personal exploration of his own work.
The Lleyn Peninsula, North Wales, where he now resides, has been the inspiration for his printmaking, sculpture and painting for the past thirty years.
This is a restless landscape which barely conceals the scars of the upheavals which formed its mountains and coastline. “It fidgets as if its waiting for something to happen”.
It is this fidgeting which has captured the imagination of this artist, the evidence for which can be found in much of his work.
This starting point becomes an idea –where it will take the artist is unlikely to be clarified until well into the painting – colour and gesture prods the artist towards a conclusion, but if an element of “surprise” does not feature in the paintings progress then he will be suspicious of the paintings’ pedigree.
The impulse to work primarily with the landscape of coastal Wales and the Lleyn Peninsula in particular is now ingrained and underlying what is observed lies the bones of his work - an emotional and abstract framework which holds his painting and printmaking together.
He has had numerous one man and group shows. Elected to the Royal Cambrian Academy, he continues to work mainly within Wales.
National collections in Malaysia and Singapore hold his work and much can be found in the hands of private individuals worldwide.
